Report on the exchange at the University of California, Irvine (1 April - 31 July 2025, Paul Richter)

August 29, 2025

I had the opportunity to write my master's thesis at UC Irvine in Southern California in the summer of 2025 as part of the ERASMUS+ program organized by Prof. Mehring. In cooperation with the Combustion Laboratory (UCICL), I was able to delve deeper into my research topic on high-speed recordings of liquid atomization under the supervision of Prof. Vincent McDonell and at the same time experience the unique “American Campus Spirit” up close (see photo 1). The close exchange with students and researchers not only helped me professionally, but also gave me exciting insights into everyday research at a renowned American university.
My workplace was located in the graduate students' office in the Engineering Laboratory Facility (ELF) (see photo 2). Most of them are working on their PhD there, mainly on topics such as fuel cells, hydrogen economy or combustion.

Summer in Southern California offers an endless number of possibilities: Beach volleyball at Newport Beach, surfing, swimming or hiking tours in nearby national parks (see photo 3 to 4 and videos 1 to 3). During the weekends, I explored the surrounding cities together with other international students and locals: Whether Los Angeles or San Diego - each city has its own charm, a diverse range of entertainment and cultural highlights (see photos 5 to 9 and videos 4 to 5)

The exchange program not only helped me to improve my English skills in everyday life and in an academic context, but also gave me a unique international experience. But the best thing was the people I met there (see photo 4). Many of these encounters resulted in friendships - and it is a special feeling to now have friends all over the world.
I can only recommend anyone to take advantage of this opportunity: an absolute enrichment from a professional, personal and cultural point of view - and a time you will never forget

Paul Richter
